Components of volumes
FS manages logical volumes of P-VOLs and V-VOLs of S-VOLs as FS pairs. Logical volumes of
P-VOLs include V-VOLs that have a provisioning type is Thin Provisioning. You can only use V-VOLs
that are used by an FS pair as an S-VOL. The differential data of P-VOLs are stored as snapshot
data in pool volumes.
To use FS, include at least one of the following volumes:
P-VOL
Secondary volume (V-VOL)
FS pool-VOL, as a container for snapshot data
NOTE: FS, THP, and the other P9500 software applications require license agreements with HP.
Consistency groups
If you use the RAID Manager, you can define multiple FS pairs as a consistency group. If you
define the consistency group in advance, you can store snapshot data per consistency group.
Therefore, data of the time when the P9500 storage system receives the request of storing data
are assured.
For more information about storing snapshot data for a consistency group, see “Storing snapshot
data for a group workflow” (page 10).
Snapshot groups
When you define new pairs using FS, and you want to perform the FS task per group, add pairs
to a consistency group or a snapshot group.
The following table shows the difference between consistency groups and snapshot groups.

group workflow” (page 10).
Fast Snap
You use FS on the Remote Web Console (RWC) computer that is connected to the service processor
(SVP) by means of the TCP/IP local area network (LAN). When you log in to the SVP from your
RWC computer, FS for RWC is downloaded. You can use FS for RWC to configure or view statistics
on your storage system and perform tasks on FS pairs.
Thin Provisioning
To perform FS tasks, you must install THP on the RWC computer. An THP license is required. Reserve
enough license capacity to accommodate the pairs or pools that you plan to create.
Calculate the licensed capacity for THP based on the capacity of pool-VOLs for FS and THP. These
volumes are referred to as used volumes. The licensed capacity must exceed the total capacity of
used volumes.
