Replacing the failed component
CAUTION:
Components can b
e damaged by electrostatic discharge. Observe the following proper anti-static
protection:
• Always transport and store CRUs in an ESD protective enclosure.
• Do not remove th
eCRUfromtheESDprotectiveenclosureuntilyouarereadytoinstallit.
• Always use ESD precautions, such as a wrist stra p, heel straps on conductiv e flooring, and an ESD
protective smock when handli ng ESD sensitive equipment.
• Avoid touchin
g the CRU connector pins, leads, or circuitry.
• Do not place ESD generating material such as p aper or non anti-static (pink) plastic in an ESD
protective enclosure with ESD sensitive equipment.
• H P recommends waiting until periods of low storage system activity to replace a c omponent.
• When replacing components at the rear of the rack, cabling may obstruct access to the
component. Carefully move any cables out of the way to avoid loosening any connections. In
particular, avoid cable damage that may be caused by:
• Kinking or bending.
• Disconnecting cables without capping. If uncapped, cable performance may be impaired by
contact with dust, metal or other surfaces.
• Placing removed c ables on the floororothersurfaces,wheretheymaybewalkedonor
otherwise compressed.
• Replacement procedures are provided with each component. You can also download the
replacement instructions from the Manuals page of the Business S uppor t Center website. see
“Related documentation” on page 13 for more information.
Returning the defective part
HP specifies, in the m a terials shipped with a replacement CSR part, whether the defective component
must be returned to H P. Where re quired, you must ship the defective component back to HP within a
defined period of time, normally five (5) b usiness days. The defective component must be returned with
the associated documentation p rovided in the shipping material. Failure to return the defective component
may result in HP billing you for the repla cem ent. With a customer self repair, HP will pay all shipping and
component return costs a nd determine the courier/carrier to be used.
Before you begin
Observe the following precautions when replacing the disk:
• Ensure you have a replacement part available before removing the failed component. Removing
a component impacts co oling within the enclosure.
• Donotremovemorethanonediskatatimefromtheenclosure.Doingsowillimpactcoolingof
the enclosure and m ay cause data loss.
• Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Use proper anti-static protection.
• Have a copy of the product user guide available for reference. You can download a copy of the
user guide from the prod uct support page on the HP website.

To assist you in replacing the disk, a replacement video i s available. You can view the video at the
following website. The same procedure is used for EVA3000/5000 and EVA4x00/6x00/8x00 products.
