File System (MSNFS)
This chapter discusses networking features in Microsoft Ser vices for Network File System (MSNFS).
MSNFS Featur es
MSNFS is an update to the NFS components that were previo usly available in Services for UNIX 3.5.
MSNFS include
s the following new features:
Updated administration snap-in—MSNFS Administration
Active Directory Lookup—The Identity M anagement for UNIX Active Directory schema extension,
available in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, includes UNIX user identier (UI D ) and
group identi
er (GID ) elds, which enables Server for NFS and Client for N FS to look up
Windows-to
-UNIX user account map pings directly from Active Directory. Identity Ma nagem ent for
UNIX simpli
es Windows-to-UNIX user account mapping management in Active Directory.
Enhanced server performance—Microsoft Services for NFS includes a le lter driver, which
signicantly reduces common server le access latencies.
UNIX speci
al device support— Microsoft Ser vices for NFS supports UNIX special devices (mknod).
Enhanced UNIX support—Microsoft Services for NFS now supports the following versions of UNIX:
•HewlettPackardHP-UXversion11i
•IBMAIXve
rsion 5L 5.2
•RedHatLinuxversion9
Sun Microsystems Solaris version 9
The follo
wing features that were previously available in Services for UNIX 3.5 are not included in MSNFS:

UNIX Identity Management
Identity Management for UNIX makes it easy to integrate users of Windows operating systems into
existing UN IX environments. It provides manageability components that simplify net work administration
and account ma n agem ent across both platforms.
With Identity Ma nag em ent for UNIX, the administrator can:
Manage user accounts and passwords on Windows and UNIX systems using Network Information
Service (NIS).
Automatically synchronize passwords between Windows and UNIX operating systems.
UNIX Identity Management consists of the following components:
Administration components
Password synchronization
Server for NIS
The UNIX Identity Managem ent component is not enabled by default on the stora g e server. To install
this component:
