Migrating an Array
InatraditionalRAIDenvironment,whenauserwantstochangethecurrentstateofa
diskoracurrentarraytoanewRAIDconfiguration,theprocessofreconfiguringthenew
arrayinvolvesmultiplesteps.Theusermustbackupthedata,deletethearray,re‐bootthe
PC,and
thenreconfigurethenewarray.
MediaShieldRAIDallowstheendusertochangethecurrentstateofthediskorarrayto
anotherwithaone‐stepprocesscalledʺMigratingʺ.ThissectiondescribestheNV IDIA
MigratingprocessandexplainshowtouseMigratingtoconvertfromoneRAIDarray
typetoanother.
General Migrating Requirements
•Thenewarraycapacitymustbeequaltoorgreaterthanthepreviousarray.
Forexample,itispossibletomigratefromaRAID1arraytoaRAID0arrayaslongas
theRAID0arrayisthesamesizeas(orlargerthan)theRAID1array.
•The
numberofdisksinthenewarraycannotbelessthanthenumberofdisksinthe
originalarray.
•Youcannotmigrate
• ToorfromaJBOD(Spanning)array
• FromRAID1toRAID1
• FromRAID0+1toRAID1
• FromRAID5to1
Migrating to an Array Larger Than 2 TB
YourdisksmustbepartitionedusingtheGUIDpartitiontable(GPT)ifyouplanto
migratetoanarraywithgreaterthan2TBstorage.
IfyouroriginalarrayisnotaGPTdiskandyouexpandyourarray’scapacityusingthe
migrationfeaturetoover2TB,youwillnot
beabletoaccesstheadditionalstorageabove
2TBinthenewarray.Tousetheadditionalstorageinthissituation,backupyou rdata,
repartitionthearrayusingGPT,thenrestoreyourdatatothenewvolume.
Note:Besuretomakethevolumedynamicifyouplanto
havemorethanfourpartitions.
