As part of preparation for the VMA SAN Gateway redundant pairing process, you will need to
determine which gateway pairing scenario you have and perform any actions on any previously
deployed or existing gateway configuration that are required.
Also as part of the preparation process, you will need to determine which VMA SAN Gateway will
take on the role of the ‘primary’ gateway. During this preparation process the primary gateway will
be updated to VMA SAN Gateway software OE G5.1.0 or newer and all VMA Arrays must be
upgraded to A5.1.3 array firmware or newer.
Defining the network IP addressing plan for each of the gateways in the redundant pair and also the
LAN/Ethernet switch connections are also part of the preparation step.
Define Network IP Addressing Plan
For deployment and correct functioning of a redundant pair of VMA SAN Gateways, you will need to
determine physical IP addresses for each gateway to be used for gateway management and a virtual
IP address and VLAN which will be used for communication and coordination between the paired
gateways.
Before moving to the next steps, identify the following:
Two IP addresses, one per gateway in the pair. These will be entered in the gateway set-up
wizard as the ‘Public interface IP address’, step # 3.
One VLAN which will be used for redirection of management traffic between paired
gateways
One virtual IP (VIP) address which will become the public interface for user management
and seamlessly relocate to the active master of the gateway pair
If you are starting with one or two existing VMA SAN Gateway configurations as part of this pairing
process, then you may have already established the two IP addresses and possibly the VIP
address/VLAN that are required for deployment.
Ideally for redundant VMA SAN Gateway pairs, two Ethernet switches will be used for higher
network reliability of inter-gateway communication and user management of the gateways; however
a single Ethernet switch could be used to connect the Ethernet connections from both paired
